AMARCORD (1973)
Screening as part of Italian Language Week, this comedy-drama is the semi-autobiographical tale of Titta - a young boy growing up in a coastal village in 1930s fascist Italy. A slice-of-life cultural satire, the dream-like structure of the film evokes strong nostalgia through absurd situations and larger than life characters.
The film explores “how memory operates as a subjective, beautiful, and sometimes deceptive illusion while simultaneously delivering a sharp satirical critique of Italian Fascism.” - The Criterion Collection
Amarcord won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1974, and was also nominated for Best Director and Best Original Screenplay the following year.
